Did you know that according to the Institute of Inspection , Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC) you should have your carpets cleaned AT LEAST 1 TIME PER YEAR depending on the amount of traffic . The IICRC is a professional association that trains & monitors cleaning technicians throughout North America. To help you decide how often your carpets need to be cleaned, I have included a graph from the IICRC S100 Standards. These standards provide the guidelines used by the Carpet Industry to give your carpet the longest life possible.

How To Remove Beer Stains and Spills From Carpet: Victoria Carpet Care

Step 1
·               For large beer stains, work from the outside of stain to the center to prevent spreading.
·               Blot up beer spills with a white towel or paper towel.
·               Mix a solution of 1/4 teaspoon of clear hand dishwashing detergent with 1 cup of water. Stir gently.
·               Apply detergent solution directly to a white cloth. Dampen the carpet fibers in the stained area with the cloth. Avoid saturating the carpet.
·               Wipe gently. Turn cloth frequently. Never rub, scrub or use a brush. This may damage carpet fibers.
·               If necessary, use your fingertips to work the solution to the base of the stain.
·               Wet the stained carpet fibers with clear, lukewarm water to rinse.
·               Cover the spot with an absorbent white towel or paper towel and apply pressure to blot.
·               Repeat the rinsing and blotting procedures until you are sure all traces of the detergent have been removed.
·               If the beer stain is gone, place an absorbent white towel or paper towel over the area cleaned, and weigh towels down with a heavy, colorfast object, such as a weighted plastic wastebasket.
·               Change towels or paper towels until carpet dries.
·               If beer stain remains, proceed to Step 2.
Step 2
·               Do NOT use on coffee, tea or urine stains.
·               Mix 2 tablespoons of non-bleaching, non-sudsing household ammonia with 1 cup of lukewarm water.
·               Apply ammonia solution, rinse and blot as outlined in Step 1.
·               Do not dry with paper towels. Proceed to Step 3 to neutralize the ammonia solution.
Step 3
·               Mix 1 cup of white vinegar with 2 cups of water.
·               Apply vinegar solution, rinse and blot as outlined in Step 1.

v TEST # 1: THE “SLAP” TEST – surface dust
Place a bright light over the top of one of your sofa cushions and using a stick (like a paint mixing stick or wooden spoon) whack the cushion 2-3 times. Observe the amount of dust that is released into the air. If you see a cloud of dust your furniture needs to be cleaned.
v TEST #2: THE BLACK CLOTH TEST – embedded particulate
Use your vacuum cleaner attachment nozzle and take a piece of thin black cloth and rubber band it to the end of the vacuum hose – let it drape into the hose a little way. Put the upholstery tool on the end of the hose. Now turn the vacuum on and run it across the top of the cushion. Take off the upholstery tool and Observe all the dead skin, dander, and other particles. If you see accumulations of fine particles
v TEST #3: THE WHITE TOWEL TEST – protein soils
Take a small amount of water and spray it on a white terry cloth towel. Now go and briskly scrub it across one of your seat cushions or arm covers. Look at the towel. Any questions?
v TEST #4: THE SNIFF TEST - malodors
Completely exhale. Place your nose 3” above the seat cushions and waft the surface air to your nose using one hand in a fanning motion. Do you notice any odors? Soil accumulations foster bacterial growth that feed on the contaminants and creatures living in the fibers of your furniture fabrics. If your furniture smells funky it’s an indication that it should be professionally cleaned as soon as possible.

Here are 12 ways you can use vinegar to help make your home cleaner – and greener!
1. Scour your sink, tub and floors: Blend a quarter cup of baking soda, a tablespoon of liquid soap and enough vinegar to make it a bit creamy and you’ve got a great substitute for chemical scrub cleaners.
2. Clean your counters: Pour white vinegar undiluted on a cloth and freshen up your counters.
3. In the laundry: A quarter cup of vinegar added to your laundry load will not only act as a fabric softener, it will also reduce static cling.

6 Easy Tips For Keeping Your Carpet Looking Like New!

1. Vacuum frequently and thoroughly. Dirt is the number one cause of wear and tear to your carpet. Be sure that you are vacuuming thoroughly at least once per week to keep the dry soils to a minimum and maximize the life of your carpet.
2. Clean up spots and spills swiftly and properly. To properly remove a spot use a clean absorbent towel (preferably a white one to avoid color transfer) and hot tap water in a spray bottle containing a small amount of a mild detergent – just make sure the detergent does not contain bleaching agents. Next, alternate blotting and spraying the area, DO NOT over wet the spot. You can even place a dry absorbent towel under something heavy like a book to completely remove the moisture from the carpet. Most spots can be removed if they are caught early. Of course the exceptions are, if a spill contains a dye, (i.e. red juice) or a bleaching agent then the spot is usually permanent.
3. Never scrub or rub spots. The correct method to remove a spill is to scrape the spot towards the middle and then blot with a white towel or cloth. Scrubbing or rubbing the spot will fray the carpet fibers and permanently damage the area.
4. Do not overuse carpet detergents, shampoos or spotters. Some people are addicted to their carpet spotters, but too much detergent in the carpet will result in a dirt attracting residue that will make your carpet appear dirty faster.
5. Clean your carpets professionally every 6-12 months. Carpet manufactures recommend cleaning your carpets professionally with van mounted steam cleaning. By cleaning every 6-12 months you will extend the life of your carpet and have a healthier, cleaner home.
6. Re-apply “Carpet Protector” every other cleaning. Carpet protector “seals” the fibers of your carpets and makes them resistant to most household stains. Carpeting is really simple to care for and an easy, regular care plan will help you preserve the beautiful look of your carpeting for many years to come. Follow these important care tips to all carpets and area rugs.
1.     Instant Removal of spills to prevent spots and stains (See directions below).
2.     Every day light vacuuming of heavy traffic areas to pick up surface dirt, grime and debris.
3.     Weekly thorough vacuuming with a correctly adjusted vacuum cleaner to get out the embedded dirt that can cause early wear and tear to your carpets and rugs. Victoria Carpet Care recommends a vacuum cleaner with a rotating brush or “brush/beater bar” to agitate the pile and loosens soil particles. The exception to this is for shag styled products with longer yarns which might tend to wrap around a rotating brush. For these styles we recommend a suction-only vacuum.
4.     Get your carpets professionally cleaned at least every 12 months. You may need to have your carpets cleaned more often, depending on traffic, kids and pets! Also a lighter shade of carpet may require more diligent cleaning. This is important for best appearance and longest life from carpeting and area rugs.
5.     You can keep your area rugs looking great and extending the rugs life by turning them around once in a while, changing the parts that get walked on the most, evening out wear.

Victoria Carpet Care: After Carpet Cleaning Instruction

It is best to stay off damp carpet as much as possible both to avoid tracking and to allow pile to dry in its “up” position.
Most carpets will dry within a few hours given the proper conditions. If you must walk on carpet before it is dry or within the first 12 to 24 hours, it is best to have on clean hard soled shoes or slippers (non marking).
Be careful when walking off carpet on to linoleum, cement or tiled areas. It can be very slippery.
Any furniture removed from cleaning area should not be put back for at least 24 hours to ensure complete drying has occurred. (rust spots, furniture stains and improper drying may result if items are put back too soon)
Increased air circulation and ventilation will aid in your carpeting to dry. Turn on any ceiling fans and air movers; turn on oven and bathroom exhaust fans and any dehumidifiers. Open any windows if temperature outside is above 70 degrees and dry.
Turn heat up to 70-75 degrees for the first 24 hours.
Pads and Styrofoam blocks under your furniture should be left in place for 48-72 hours.

After Protecting:

Open windows and doors if possible to help with ventilation.
While all of our products have been found very safe, we still advise to keep children and pets off of treated areas for a minimum of 12 hours or until it is completely dry.
Clean hard soled shoes should be worn if you have to walk on treated areas.
