6 Easy Tips For Keeping Your Carpet Looking Like New!

1. Vacuum frequently and thoroughly. Dirt is the number one cause of wear and tear to your carpet.  Be sure that you are vacuuming thoroughly at least once per week to keep the dry soils to a minimum and maximize the life of your carpet.
2. Clean up spots and spills swiftly and properly.  To properly remove a spot use a clean absorbent towel (preferably a white one to avoid color transfer) and hot tap water in a spray bottle containing a small amount of a mild detergent – just make sure the detergent does not contain bleaching agents.  Next, alternate blotting and spraying the area, DO NOT over wet the spot.  You can even place a dry absorbent towel under something heavy like a book to completely remove the moisture from the carpet.  Most spots can be removed if they are caught early.  Of course the exceptions are, if a spill contains a dye, (i.e. red juice) or a bleaching agent then the spot is usually permanent.
3. Never scrub or rub spots. The correct method to remove a spill is to scrape the spot towards the middle and then blot with a white towel or cloth.  Scrubbing or rubbing the spot will fray the carpet fibers and permanently damage the area.
4.  Do not overuse carpet detergents, shampoos or spotters.  Some people are addicted to their carpet spotters, but too much detergent in the carpet will result in a dirt attracting residue that will make your carpet appear dirty faster.
5. Clean your carpets professionally every 6-12 months.  Carpet manufactures recommend cleaning your carpets professionally with van mounted steam cleaning.  By cleaning every 6-12 months you will extend the life of your carpet and have a healthier, cleaner home.
6. Re-apply “Carpet Protector” every other cleaning.   Carpet protector “seals” the fibers of your carpets and makes them resistant to most household stains.  It also makes your vacuuming more efficient.  The effectiveness of carpet protector is reduced about 30-35% with each cleaning.  But, by re-applying at least every other cleaning you will continue to protect your carpet from stains and everyday wear and tear, giving your carpet the longest life possible

5.     You can keep your area rugs looking great and extending the rugs life by turning them around once in a while, changing the parts that get walked on the most, evening out wear.

Victoria Carpet Care: After Carpet Cleaning Instruction

1. It is best to stay off damp carpet as much as possible both to avoid tracking and to allow pile to dry in its up position.
2. Most carpets will dry within a few hours given the proper conditions. If you must walk on carpet before it is dry or within the first 12 to 24 hours, it is best to have on clean hard soled shoes or slippers (non marking).
3. Be careful when walking off carpet on to linoleum, cement or tiled areas. It can be very slippery.
4. Any furniture removed from cleaning area should not be put back for at least 24 hours to ensure complete drying has occurred. (rust spots, furniture stains and improper drying may result if items are put back too soon)
5. Increased air circulation and ventilation will aid in your carpeting to dry. Turn on any ceiling fans and air movers; turn on oven and bathroom exhaust fans and any dehumidifiers. Open any windows if temperature outside is above 70 degrees and dry.
6. Turn heat up to 70-75 degrees for the first 24 hours.
7. Pads and Styrofoam blocks under your furniture should be left in place for 48-72 hours.

After Protecting:

1. Open windows and doors if possible to help with ventilation.
2. While all of our products have been found very safe, we still advise to keep children and pets off of treated areas for a minimum of 12 hours or until it is completely dry.
3. Clean hard soled shoes should be worn if you have to walk on treated areas.

Oriental rugs are beautiful, handcrafted pieces of art, and unfortunately one stain can cause your rug to lose significant value and appeal. But as we all know, spills happen and pets have accidents. If your Oriental rug is located in a high-traffic area where food or pets are common, it’s a good idea to know exactly what to do in case a spill happens, and when to know it’s time for the rug to be cleaned professionally.
Oriental rugs, while usually wool, often have a highly absorbent cotton base. What this means for you when spills happen, is that the spot on the surface may be small but the spill has spread throughout a large area below the surface of your Oriental rug. Moisture in general can lead to mildew and dry rot issues, food spills can attract unwanted bugs, and pet accidents undoubtedly cause unwanted odors to linger.

How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies With Apple Cider Vinegar And Dish Soap: Victoria Carpet Care

It's that time of the year!  I noticed my first Fruit Fly in the kitchen last night!  As you know these little critters can become a real nuisance in the home, especially in the kitchen.  I have decided this would be a great time to post my favorite non-toxic way of getting rid of those pesky little bugs.  Hopefully you will find this article helpful!   Once fruit flies have descended upon your space, they can be extremely difficult to get rid of. Follow these tips to keep the pesky bugs out of your kitchen for good.  It's that time of the year that I am starting to notice those little fruit flies in the kitchen. There are many of things you could do to prevent fruit fly infestations, like keeping rotting or overripe fruit out of your kitchen, but once they are in your house…well they just seem to never go away.   Start by putting all ripened fruit or vegetables like onions, tomatoes, and potatoes in the refrigerator and cleaning recycling bins that hold empty bottles and cans to eliminate the sources of attraction and breeding.
My personal favorite non-chemical, non-toxic, technique for trapping and killing fruit flies involves apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap.
Here are the simple instructions:
1. Pour a cup of apple cider vinegar into a jar or small bowl.
2. Add a couple drops of dish soap to the jar.
3. Place in the area where you've seen the fruit flies, and wait for the trap to do its job.
Why This Works:
This works because Fruit flies are attracted to the smell of the vinegar, and will try to land on its surface. But, they're in for a surprise – since the dish soap breaks the surface tension of the vinegar, the fruit flies fall in and drown.
The result is a lot of dead fruit flies, which can be conveniently poured down your drain.

How To Clean COFFEE Spills From Carpet: via Victoria Carpet Care

When it comes to spilled coffee, time is of the essence, the sooner you can treat these spills, the less likely that there will be a stain.
Step 1

• For large stains, work from the outside of stain to the center to prevent spreading.
• Blot up liquid spills with a white towel or paper towel.
• Mix a solution of 1/4 teaspoon of clear hand dishwashing detergent with 1 cup of water. Stir gently.
• Apply detergent solution directly to a white cloth. Dampen the carpet fibers in the stained area with the cloth. Avoid saturating the carpet.
• Wipe gently. Turn cloth frequently. Never rub, scrub or use a brush. This may damage carpet fibers.
• If necessary, use your fingertips to work the solution to the base of the stain.
• Wet the stained carpet fibers with clear, lukewarm water to rinse.
• Cover the spot with an absorbent white towel or paper towel and apply pressure to blot.
• Repeat the rinsing and blotting procedures until you are sure all traces of the detergent have been removed.
• If the stain is gone, place an absorbent white towel or paper towel over the area cleaned, and weigh towels down with a heavy, color-fast object, such as a weighted plastic wastebasket.
• Change towels or paper towels until carpet dries.
• If stain remains, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2

• Mix 1 cup of white vinegar with 2 cups of water.

Apply vinegar solution, rinse and blot as outlined in Step 1.

6 Easy Tips For Keeping Your Carpet Looking Like New!

1. Vacuum often and thoroughly. Dirt is the number one cause of wear and tear to your carpet.  Be sure that you are vacuuming thoroughly at least once per week to keep the dry soils to a least amount and make the most of the life of your carpet.
2. Clean up spots and spills swiftly and properly.  To properly remove a spot use a clean absorbent towel (preferably a white one to avoid color transfer) and hot tap water in a spray bottle containing a small amount of a mild detergent – just make sure the detergent does not contain bleaching agents.  Next, alternate blotting and spraying the area, DO NOT over wet the spot.  You can even place a dry absorbent towel under something heavy like a book to completely remove the moisture from the carpet.  Most spots can be removed if they are caught early.  Of course the exceptions are, if a spill contains a dye, (i.e. red juice) or a bleaching agent then the spot is usually permanent.
3. Never scrub or rub spots. The accurate method to remove a spill is to scrape the spot towards the middle and then blot with a white towel or cloth.  Scrubbing or rubbing the spot will fray the carpet fibers and permanently damage the area.
4.  Do not overuse carpet detergents, shampoos or spotters.  Some people are addicted to their carpet spotters, but too much detergent in the carpet will result in a dirt attracting residue that will make your carpet appear dirty faster.
5. Clean your carpets professionally every 6-12 months.  Carpet manufactures advise cleaning your carpets professionally with van mounted steam cleaning.  By cleaning every 6-12 months you will extend the life of your carpet and have a healthier, cleaner home.
6. How To Clean COFFEE Spills From Carpet: Victoria and West Shore Area

When it comes to spilled coffee, time is of the essence, the sooner you can treat these spills, the less likely that there will be a stain.
Step 1

• For large stains, work from the outside of stain to the center to prevent spreading.
• Blot up liquid spills with a white towel or paper towel.
• Mix a solution of 1/4 teaspoon of clear hand dishwashing detergent with 1 cup of water. Stir gently.
• Apply detergent solution directly to a white cloth. Dampen the carpet fibers in the stained area with the cloth. Avoid saturating the carpet.
• Wipe gently. Turn cloth frequently. Never rub, scrub or use a brush. This may damage carpet fibers.
• If necessary, use your fingertips to work the solution to the base of the stain.
• Wet the stained carpet fibers with clear, lukewarm water to rinse.
• Cover the spot with an absorbent white towel or paper towel and apply pressure to blot.
• Repeat the rinsing and blotting procedures until you are sure all traces of the detergent have been removed.
• If the stain is gone, place an absorbent white towel or paper towel over the area cleaned, and weigh towels down with a heavy, color-fast object, such as a weighted plastic wastebasket.
• Change towels or paper towels until carpet dries.
• If stain remains, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2

• Mix 1 cup of white vinegar with 2 cups of water.

Apply vinegar solution, rinse and blot as outlined in Step 1.

Here are the 6 ways you can extend the life and beauty of your carpet:

• Have people remove their shoes.  Post a polite sign on the door if you have to.  This is one of the biggest ways you can start saving your carpet today! 

• Vacuum frequently.  Your frequency will depend on the level of foot traffic and amount of people and pets in your home.  But you can NEVER vacuum too much.

• Keep pet accidents to a minimum.  NOTHING ruins carpets faster than urine.  Do whatever you have to do to keep the accidents off the carpet.

• Clean spots and spills immediately. But DON’T use any of the do it your self “carpet cleaning” products you see advertised on the TV.  These products are the fastest way to a big, dirt attracting, sticky residue spot.  Simply use very hot tap water with some mild detergent (no bleach agents) and clean, white, dry rags.  Soak and blot.  Never rub.

• Get your carpets professionally cleaned every 6-12 months.  NOTHING extends the life of your carpet like this step.  Even dirt you cannot see can be deep inside the carpets breaking down and wearing the fibers.  It’s the only way to prevent permanent traffic lanes and wear patterns.  Remember this rule of thumb: Clean before your carpet LOOKS dirty to prevent wear and tear – it’s time not dirt that you should judge by.

• Get your carpet professionally protected at least every other cleaning. The factory finish is removed with wear and cleanings.  This finish is a protective barrier between your carpet and soils, oils, stains and general wear and tear.  Ignoring this step will shorten the life span of your carpet considerably.
